My love/hate relationship with Barbie began at her debut in 1959, when I was three years old and just had to have one! Although Mom initially refused to buy me this “sexy” doll, by my fourth birthday I‘d worn her down. But even when Barbie was mine at last, I was dissatisfied. Where were all the clothes and shoes and accessories I’d seen on TV, that were pictured on the box? They were sold separately. Barbie reigned supreme until I was old enough to realize I’d never look anything like her. Then I hated her. She became an object of scorn. Her “perfect” figure is unattainable by real women, because proportionally, Barbie looks more like an insect than a human being.
