Artist Statement

HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY BARBIE
SCANNED ASSEMBLAGE DIGITAL FINE ART PRINTS

ABOUT THE IMAGES

Barbie is the best model to work with. She is just the right height to fit on a digital scanner, with a little adjustment and occasional stitching.. She adapts. She inspires.
She delights. She almost never ìshows her age.î And, she never complains. When attitude is called for, she has it. During my work to show women in history and myth, her willingness to take on any role gave my images a new depth by her presence.

Viva Barbie!

Some of my work involves appropriation of the art of earlier artists, painters; such as,
Frida Kahlo, Bottecelli. Other work involves imagery of Western and Eastern female traditions.

ABOUT THE PROCESS

I make scanned assemblage using a digital scanner as a shallow depth of field
camera to make ìportraitsî of women in myth and reality using dolls to represent
the characters. On occasion, I write stories on these prints, mostly in counterpoint
to the image but occasionally as an exact reference to the image.

Recent work combines images digitally photographed as well as those scanned.
I work toward creating traditional illusions of space on a two dimensional background as
well as ambiguous spacial Illusionary events "fooling the eye" made possible by Photoshop software.
