- Artist Bio
I grew up when playing meant, playing with Barbie. I still Play Barbie, although now, it is called art.
I don’t particularly think of myself as an artist: Artists are more creative than me. I just copy scenes from life. Artists go to school and study art. I’ve had no training. Artists may spend hours in a museum, studying one piece. I go to the gift shop.
No, I am not an artist. I simply suffer obsessions. I see what is possible, and then I must make it.
I was born in 1954, and grew up in Kansas. This will be the first public showing of my work.
- Artist Statement
Breasts. Large, ample, huge breasts. Tiny waist. Girl next door smile. Ponytail. Legs up to there, which is, in effect, nowhere. “Barbie doesn’t have a woo-woo!” I exclaimed to my mother. “She has one,” Mommy said patiently, “She has it hidden away until she marries Ken.”
Innocence/ Sexiness. Power/ Surrender. Freedom/ Restraints. These dichotomous themes emerge in this covert glimpse into Barbie’s World.
I work with left-overs, remnants, recycled, and upcycled materials, just as I did when I was a child, sewing sexy little outfits for Barbie to wear on her dates with Ken.
