Artist Bio

Currently Alis Cummings is located in San Francisco, California. The beauty and light of the coast influence her work as well as her urban surroundings. She finds the openness of the ocean horizon as inspirational as the people who live there.

Cummings' interest in photography blossomed in college when as a graphic design student she took her first photography class as an elective. After receiving a BFA in Graphic Design she continued exploring photography.

The techniques Cummings uses include traditional black and white film photography, alternative photography processes including gum dichromate and van dyke emulsions and now digital photography.

In 2005 Cummings acquired her first digital camera. The possibilities of this medium combined with computer application manipulation have added another layer to her work.

She is now a MFA Candidate at the Academy of Art University New Media Department.

Artist Statement

Photography allows me to analyze my everyday and express my interpretation through the choices that I make in displaying these ideas.

Watching

This group of photographs looks at the concerns of having an adult relationship between a man and a woman in the audience of a child. The doll figurines Ken and Midge have taken on the roles of the adult characters (although Barbie appears once in the series). By using a child's toy I am suggesting that our relationships within the home are never private and are open for interpretation and reenactment by every member of the family.
