Artist Bio

Hi Honey. I am Cherrie Williams of Oakland, California, the "Singing Domestic/Doll Lady" and Creator of the smallest Aunt Jemima doll in the world with pancakes only 1/8 inch across (as seen in "Ripley's Believe it or Not", 4/11/05). Since facing the fear of homelessness, reviving my dormant memories around my Grandma Susie and the old house (which is now a part of Magnolia Mound Plantation Museum in Baton Ruge, LA), has presented my live with new meaning. I use the arts and entertainment for healing the wounds of anger and violence. My intuition and imagination have brought me to my success as a folk artist/singer/performer.

Artist Statement

My art is mixed media; painting and performance. I create much of my art from "found objects" having been inspired by my "Grandma Susie", who was, herself, a folk artist. My most famous creation, the "Tiniest Jemima", was inspired by an aunt who was cooking pancakes in the kitchen as I sat at her gingham covered table with a box of Aunt Jemima pancake mix. I also perform on stage, singing my original grass roots compositions in jazz, blues, rock and hip hop. My mixed media submission, Michelle Obama's, "Feed your kids healthy foods", feeding your kids healthy foods is all about mind, body and spirit. "The total person." Having lost 28 pounds myself realizing the necessity of good health matters. Respect, choice, hope and change for a better quality of life depicts my interpretation of Barbie dolls as being the model of adolescence. We all can't be Barbie doll thin because people come in different sizes, makeup, and cultural background but we can all strive to be healthy. This all adds up to peace of mind. To many of us now a days rely on negative food choice that has led to overweight young people (eat your whole foods). This is a recycled art piece that hangs on the wall made of wood, human hair wig pieces, cotton, rice, acrylic paint, fabric, and paper. The journey continues self discovery (my performance art work piece). Thank You!!!
