Altered Barbie on Flavorpill

One of the 20th century's most recognizable, beloved, and debated icons (and her genital-less beau) gets made over by more than 100 local artists at this perennially popular yearly exhibit celebrating creative reuse. This year Barbie is turning 50 and Altered Barbie has pulled out all the stops for their artists' reception: there's Barbie haiku, a performance by Velocity Circus, Barbie-inspired short films, and even a puppet show. Attendees are also encouraged to come in Barbie and Ken drag, so take a note from Kay Thompson's snappy fashion editor in Funny Face and "think pink!" - Matt Sussman

with their dolls. And what unites these artists, says Julie Anderson, co-curator of this year's San Francisco Altered Barbie Exhibition, is the desire to make Barbie more real.
"Barbie is such an icon in our...

Welcome to the Dollhouse - SF Examiner 2008

It Looks like Marisa Nakasone of the San Francisco Examiner had a blast at the Altered Barbie Opening Big and deams it a great Success!! She talks about her impressions of the art: One of the craziest and bravest shows you will see in the city, brace yourself for works that are humorous, disturbing, heartfelt, and honest all at once.

And the people I was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming and community-like vibe as the people at the gallery (costumed, of course, in standard-issue barbie doll attire: sherbert-y colored taffetta and sequined gowns) greeted me at the door.

And of the gallery atmosphere . Unlike your typical gallery where one piece hangs in subliminal glory on a white, expansive wall, in this show, art covers the walls and even the floor. While this type of presentation is not very conventional this show is inherently unconventional and the folks at Art 94124 had their kitschy and tongue-in-cheek vibe down pat. As if to further rebel from convention,...
