Artist Statement

I saw an objectified, naked, and censored Barbie in a magazine once and it left me in a fervent state. How could Barbie be treated this way? Why? How? Something about that image struck me that day and has left me with an abundance of thoughts to explore.

I now find myself using Barbie to examine my own roles, thoughts, and feelings about society and myself, much like I did in my childhood. She has once again become a mechanism in which to understand my surroundings and place in the world.

The relationship I have with Barbie has developed in so many new and interesting ways now that I am looking at her through adult eyes. What I have found has been more than surprising; pain, confusion, anger, anxiety, and frustration is just a few of the emotions that I am trying to capture within my work. Barbie has become my reluctant representative as I explore femininity, gender roles, beauty standards, and myself.
