32 Big Pictures - A new book from Altered Barbie Member Dana Smith

32 Big Pictures"32 Big Pictures" is a reproduction of a series of collages by Dana F. Smith created using traditional collage techniques - scissors, paste, paper.

Dana F. Smith, has used cut and paste techniques to create an intricate series of collages based in the theme of Barbie. Dana “colored” a child’s coloring book with images from magazines by painstakingly cutting up magazines and gluing each piece into the black-lined images of Barbie. Each collage has the underlying theme of a yearly season or holiday, and then the imagery used to “color” the collage lends a second sub-theme that is derived from the use of a particular type of photo or magazine.

You can see images of each page of the book here or purchase a copy here.

Call to Artists 2010

Romancing the Barbie: A Call to Artists

Altered Barbie 2010 - Welcome from Herb Kaufman

Barbie Provides

My name is Herb Kaufman, I'm the project manager for Altered Barbie 2010. I have been meeting with Sensei Jill in coffee places around this city we love, meticulously preparing the ground for this year's show.

We're approaching the show like we're building a park. Team Jill prepares the soil, the artists plant the trees (and strange shrubs), and the viewers are mother nature, kind and cruel.

We want to give every artist a solid, healthy place to start and grow; whether they want to build on their current creative trajectory or take a much needed break from said trajectory. We offer Barbie.

This merry month of May we'll be deciding the two big numbers for the show, the when and where. We're digging it, right now, its all about the dirt and hopes for the future. All things through Barbie.

Altered Barbie 2010 - Welcome from Olivia Rivas

Altered Barbie 2010Every day Barbie is bombarded with messages from the likes of eHarmony, Match.com and her Mother telling her that she needs Ken to make her a whole woman. This year Barbie is tired of being told that she's weird for being single. This year she yells to the world, "Say it loud - I'm single and I'm Proud!"

It's her call to arms for every person, female or male, gay or straight, married, divorced or polyamorous. Relationships are tricky, personal and different for everyone and Barbie wants to know how that her tribe loves her no matter what her Facebook status.

Come to the Altered Barbie Show this year and celebrate whatever state you're in - except Arizona - you all stay home.

Shanghai Barbie

ShanghaiAltered Barbie artist Leigh Radtke recommends the current Plastic Collection on the Barbie Collector website.

Highlights include a trip to the amazing House of Barbie in Shanghai and the "Team Pink" Foosball Table.
